Workshops at the University of Athens Observatory

The UOAO Observing Team at the University of Athens Observatory often organizes educational Workshops, which cover the basic astronomical techniques applied in Observational Astrophysics.

The UOAO Observing Team consists mainly of students of the Department of Physics who are interested in astronomical observation, optical instrumentation as well as in Research in Observational Astrophysics. In parallel with the research activity with observations from the telescope of the University of Athens, the team members are active in Education activities and Science Communication to the public.

Since the establishment of the UOAO Observing Team in 2012 until today, the following Workshops have been held, which focus on the techniques of photometry, spectroscopy, astrometry etc.

1st UOAO Observing Team Workshop - Photometric Techniques

14-17 October 2014

The first Photometry Workshop held at UOAO was attended by 3 undergraduate students. In this the techniques of photometric observation and processing were developed data by the method of differential aperture photometry. The results of the elaboration carried out in the framework of the Workshop published in a paper in the international journal IBVS. At the same time, the photometric study of the variable stars, the fields studied, led to the discovery of new variable stars, which contributed to two more publications in the international journal IBVS:

  • Petropoulou, M.; Gazeas, K.; Tzouganatos, L.; Karampotsiou, E., "110 minima timings of eclipsing binaries", 2015, IBVS 6153, 1
  • Karampotsiou, E.; Gazeas, K., "Reports on New Discoveries", 2015, IBVS 6200, 7
  • Gazeas, K.; Karampotsiou, E., "Reports on New Discoveries", 2015, IBVS 6200, 6

  • 2nd UOAO Observing Team Workshop - Photometric Techniques

    13-16 October 2015

The second Photometry Workshop held at UOAO was attended by 3 undergraduate students. In this the techniques of photometric observation and processing were developed data by the method of aperture differential photometry. The results of the elaboration carried out in the framework of the Workshop published in two papers in the international journal IBVS:

  • Tzouganatos, L.; Gazeas, K.; Karampotsiou, E.; Petropoulou, M., "107 minima timings of eclipsing binaries", 2016, IBVS 6165, 1
  • Karampotsiou, E.; Gazeas, K.; Petropoulou, M.; Tzouganatos, L., "106 minima timings of eclipsing binaries", 2016, IBVS 6158, 1

  • 3th UOAO Observing Team Workshop - Photometric Techniques

    3-7 July 2017

The third Photometry Workshop held at UOAO was attended by 8 undergraduate students. In this the techniques of photometric observation and processing were developed data by the method of aperture differential photometry. The results of the elaboration carried out in the framework of the Workshop published in two papers in the international journal IBVS:

  • Palafouta, S.; Gazeas, K.; Christopoulou, E.; Bakogianni, V.; Dervou, M.; Loukaidou, G., "120 Minima timings of eclipsing binaries", 2017, IBVS, 6218, 1P
  • Gazeas, K.; Loukaidou, G.; Tzouganatos, L.; Karampotsiou, E.; Petropoulou, M., "110 Minima timings of ultra-short orbital period eclipsing binaries", 2017, IBVS, 6217, 1G

  • 4th UOAO Observing Team Workshop - Photometric Techniques

    15-18 January 2018

The fourth Photometry Workshop held at UOAO was attended by 8 undergraduate students. In this the techniques of photometric observation and processing were developed data by the method of aperture differential photometry. The results of the elaboration carried out in the framework of the Workshop published in a paper in the international journal IBVS:

  • Loukaidou, G.; Gazeas, K., "114 Minima timings of ultra-short orbital period eclipsing binaries", 2018, IBVS, 6237, 1, L2018/02

  • 5st UOAO Observing Team Workshop - Spectroscopic Techniques

    12-24 January 2021

The first Spectroscopy Workshop held online at UOAO was attended by 16 undergraduate students. Spectroscopic observation and data processing techniques with various methods were developed in this.

The Workshops will continue to be conducted by the UOAO Observing Team. For information, you can contact the Workshop organizer and head of the UOAO Observing Team, Dr. Kosmas Gazeas, at the email: kgaze@phys.uoa.gr
